CHOLERA RESPONSE SAVING LIVES THROUGH RISK COMMUNICATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In responding to the cholera disease that has broken out in various parts of the Country, Zambia Red Cross Society Volunteers are on the ground and in the forefront, to ensure Communities are sensitized on Cholera Preventative measures.

Thanks to the Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness Program, Anne and her team were trained by ZRCS, Ministry of Health. The training highlighted causes, symptoms and preventative measures of cholera.

“The training enabled us identify cholera symptoms and quickly assist communities with immediate treatment, such as oral rehydration solution and chlorine for their drinking water, before they are referred to the hospital or clinic.”
Knocking on Doors, Saving Lives!
Anne and her fellow Volunteers, have been conducting door to door sensitization, ensuring communities receive the following cholera preventive key messages:
- Safe and Clean water is key: Drinking chlorinated or boiled water.
Store water safely: Protect drinking water from contamination by storing it in a narrow necked and covered container.
- Do not drink water from shallow wells
- Practice food hygiene: Eat warm, freshly cooked meals and cover food to keep flies away.
- Wash hands often: Use medicated soap and water after using the toilet or changing a baby’s diaper
- Visit the nearest health facility immediately you suspect cholera
“We’re saving lives by bringing these messages directly to people’s homes,” Ann says proudly, “We won’t stop until every household is safe.” In the face of a potential health emergencies, these unsung heroes remind us that preparedness and teamwork can make all the difference.
