DROUGHT DEVASTATES CHIKANKATA, ZRCS DELIVERS K1.7 MILLION IN LIFELINE AID.

Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS), with funding from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has invested K1.7 million to address food insecurity in Chikankata District through climate-smart agriculture interventions.
In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Ministry of Health (MoH), and Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS), ZRCS has supported over 450 farming households affected by the 2023-2024 drought which was declared as a national disaster by the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema. Beneficiaries received maize (5 kg), cowpeas (2.5 kg), groundnuts (5 kg), okra seeds (250 g), and fertilizers (50 kg Urea and 50 kg Compound D) to restore agricultural productivity.

To ensure sustainability, ZRCS has trained 50 lead farmers across four farming blocks to provide ongoing support and promote climate-resilient farming practices.
The distribution, targeting 500 households, is expected to conclude by January 15, 2024. This initiative reflects ZRCS’s commitment to building resilience against climate-related challenges.
