EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS THROUGH MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT IN HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE.
Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) with support from the European Commission for Humanitarian Organization Pilot Partnership Program (ECHO PPP) is conducting a 3-days specialized training in Lusaka aimed at building the capacity of our staff and stakeholders. Therefore, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to design effective Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) programs in emergencies.
ZRCS has intensified its advocacy for incorporating MHM into every humanitarian response. Recognizing that women and girls face unique challenges during crises, we are committed to ensuring that their menstrual hygiene needs are met from the onset of any emergency. By focusing on a comprehensive approach, we address the three core components of MHM: access to materials, private and safe facilities, and information.
In Zambia, women and girls often struggle with managing menstruation due to a lack of information, cultural taboos, embarrassment, and inadequate facilities. Our holistic approach aims to provide access to essential menstrual products, create secure spaces, and educate communities to combat stigma and empower women and girls.
Our approach focuses on:
Access to Materials: Providing essential menstrual products.
Safe, Private Facilities: Creating secure spaces for menstruation.
Information and Education: Combating stigma and empowering women and girls.
Through comprehensive training, we are equipping our staff to identify barriers and develop effective MHM programs. Together, we can make a difference. By training both female and male staff, we are ensuring that our team is well-prepared to address the menstrual hygiene needs of women and girls during crises.
Other stakeholders present were the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Water Aid.
