ZAMBIA RED CROSS SOCIETY SUPPORTS KAPIRI MPOSHI SCHOOLS WITH 1,500 TREES TO MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The effects of climate change, which is both an increase in long-term average temperatures and a rise in climate variability, have been due to an increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere.

This has impacted the agricultural sector, affecting both commercial and small-scale farmers, an impact on human health in some communities due to limited access to nutritional products, impacts on wildlife and on the economy.

In response, Zambia Red Cross Society launched an initiative to plant 1,500 fruit and non-fruit trees across five schools in Kapiri Mposhi District in order to contribute towards mitigating climate change impacts.

The launch was held at Mulungushi Primary School, attended by ZRCS Kapiri Mposhi Branch President Mr. Henry Kapya, government officials, and representatives from partnering organizations. Mr. Kapya emphasized the significance of the initiative, noting that tree planting is a powerful tool in supporting Government efforts in the fight against adverse effects of climate change “By planting these trees and improving our surroundings, we are teaching our children the importance of ensuring that forests are preserved and not destroyed”, Mr Kapya said.

The five schools benefiting from this initiative are Lukanda Primary School, Mulungushi Primary School, Kapiri Day Secondary School, Mulonga Primary School, and Matilyo Primary School—each received 300 trees (200 non-fruit trees and 100 fruit trees), ensuring both environmental and nutritional benefits. To support the maintenance of these trees, the schools were also provided with essential gardening tools such as wheelbarrows, slashers, and hoes. This initiative is part of the Fourth Phase of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Project in Kapiri Mposhi District, which is supported by Japanese Red Cross.

Mr. Reuben Mwanza, Head Teacher at Mulungushi Primary School, expressed his gratitude for the initiative. He highlighted how the trees would not only enhance the school’s environment but also serve as a practical teaching tool for pupils. “This project will help us educate our learners about the importance of environmental stewardship. We are committed to ensuring these trees thrive and become an integral part of the school,” he said.

A grade seven pupil at Mulungushi Primary School, spoke about the multiple benefits the trees would bring. “These trees will provide shade, fresh air, and fruits for us. They will also remind us to take care of our environment, we are grateful to Zambia Red Cross Society for giving us this opportunity to make a positive change,” he said.
