ZRCS ROLLS OUT CATI TRAINING AS CHOLERA THREAT EMERGES IN CHILANGA DISTRICT

Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) rolls out a Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) training in Chilanga District, Lusaka Province, equipping 44 health workers and 33 community-based volunteers from Twangale and Mt Makulu health facilities to respond to suspected cholera cases recorded in several communities. The training, held on 19 January 2026, strengthens local capacity to detect, prevent and contain further spread.

Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) approach is a strategy used to contain cholera outbreaks by rapidly identifying and implementing measures to prevent transmission around affected households. The approach is based on the premise that early detection can trigger a localized response to reduce transmission and prevent the spread of the disease.

The training focused on key activities to prevent the spread of cholera, which included house screening, water sample collection for testing, household disinfection to reduce contamination, active surveillance to monitor disease spread and distribution of hygiene kits with essentials like liquid chlorine, soap, oral rehydration salt and hand sanitizers.

With this training, health workers in Chilanga are now better equipped to tackle waterborne diseases, that break out in the Communities during the rainy season. The timely intervention is expected to curb the spread of cholera and enhance health outcomes in the district. ZRCS remains committed to supporting Government in strengthening health systems and responding to public health emergencies, ultimately contributing to a healthier Zambia.
